Workshop ‘Core Communication’

I believe communication is all about connection. You share what's alive in you, and by expressing this, you invite others to connect with you. This is something dear, somewhat like a gift. It is hardly surprising that the core of the Latin communicatio is made up by munis, which has 'gift' as one of it's meanings.
It can be quite hard to recognize the gift in what you yourself or somebod else is communicating. For instance because we are in too much pain, or feel scared, woried or angry. Our unmet needs might lead us to feelings and thoughts hat hamper our connection with the other person. Or somebody might be using words that mask what's alive for her or him, like 'Man, you look tired!', or 'This memo is totaly worthless...', or 'I could really use a break right now!'

When we are aware of what's alive in us, we possess one of the most important ingredients of 'core-communication'. Being able to listen with presence and empathy to the other person, we can then check what our message stirred in him or her. Then a connection can come to live that connects people at the heart level.

During this training, I try to facilitate learning in three areas:

    1. Consciousness of feelings and needs: by being aware of what is alive in me, I take responsability for my actions of body, speech and mind and I can direct my actions in a life-enriching way.
    2. Sharing those feelings and needs: by expressing honestly what is alive in me without criticizing or blaming, I support conditions that help the other person to receive all of message. This strengthens our connection up to a point where we give and receive joyfully and from the heart.
    3. Connecting and staying connected to feelings and needs of somebody else: by listening empathically, we are totally present with what the other person is feeling and needing, without mistaking who is ultimately responsable for what. The other person will experience time and space to safely express him- or herself. We thus strengthen the trust and confidence that a request is received and honoured because somebody genuinely wants to contribute to life, to happiness, and is not driven by guilt, fear of punishment or hope for some kind of reward.

Participants will be practising situations that come from their everyday life. We will mainly be using Nonviolent Communication™ (NVC). In NVC we use observation, feeling, need and request to connect to and express what's alive in us and the people we live with.

I also like to wok with physical excercises that aid consciousness. One reason for this, is that in some ways our body is much more honest about what is alive in us than our mind. We can learn from the body, and actually also use it in different ways. Many excercises I take from Aikido, which sprang forth from the Japanese martial ways. Aikido-excercises can help us experience directly those things that are often talked about: relaxtion, focus, trust, connecting or nonresistance, to name but a few. Languae is an important tool indeed; becoming aware of our body and its signals supports the way in which we connect with others.

So when you work with NVC, wouldn't it be clearer to name the training exactly that?

For the past years I have been following NVC-courses with people like Marshall Rosenberg, Martin van der Meulen, John Kinyon en Aniruddha Gadankush. I chose the title 'Core-Communication' following a request by the Center for Nonviolent Communication. CNVC asks people who aren't certified trainers (yet) to refrain from using NVC as title for their training. Furthermore, I have noticed some discomfort when people hear the word 'nonviolence'. Many people acknowledge that they would like to communicate in more connecting ways, but few would agree that their actually aids violence...
