Workshop ‘Aikido at work’
Goals and content
Aikido is an art of connection and movement deriving from
the Japanese martial arts. Like all martial arts, Aikido is first
and foremost a way of personal development. Caring, for your wellbeing
as well as for the wellbeing of others, is central to the practice
of Aikido. When practising Aikido, we look for solutions in awareness,
presence and connection. Those are the elements that enable us
to stay focussed while at the same time keeping a broad perspective;
to make firm choices without becoming rigid; and to go with the
flow that surrounds us without feeling like a ‘push-over’.
In popular language we would probably say that Aikido is all about
effective self-management.
The exercises that we do, are quite simple and do not normally
cause strain anywhere in the body. We try to create a safe and
pleasant atmosphere where all participants can have a valuable
learning-experience. The goal is not to learn Aikido in 1 day,
but to experiment with several exercises to enlarge our awareness
and freedom of choice.
For companies, we develop custom workshops and training programs.
For your inspiration, we give some information on topics that have
been incorporated into workshops successfully:
Aikido and dealing with pressure at work
Physical complaints, work-related stress or even burn-out, agression
and intimidation: dealing with circumstances at work requires the
ability of both organisation and individual workers to adjust. Attitude,
tension and relaxation, movement and stillness play their respective
parts. During an aikido-workshop we look at these element from a
nonconventional angle: we use the wisdom of our bodies to learn,
to broaden our horizon and to become aware of what is alive in us.
When we experiment with aikido, we experiment with the power and
stability that come with of relaxation, openness and focus.
Aikido and teamwork
It almost seems like a contradiction: experiencing working together
by doing exercises that come from the martial arts. It is this same
paradox that keeps serious practitioners of the martial ways busy
for years and years, looking for the answer in hours of training.
Experimenting with aikido-exercises is an excellent way to become
aware of the connection between the way we work as an individual
and as a team. When people ‘team up’ physically, they
often experience themselves in ways that are not so clear at the
desk or in a regular meeting.
